Service to Students

Supporting students extends beyond the classroom and is an important part of my role as a faculty member at SUNY Orange. In addition to teaching, I meet with students to offer guidance, encouragement, and support as they navigate the program and plan for their future goals. My work as Field Placement Coordinator has also allowed me to support students in connecting coursework to meaningful field experiences. The activities below reflect some of the ways I have provided service to students during this time.

  • Served as Field Placement Coordinator (Fall 2025 to present)

  • Served as Future Teachers of America Advisor (Fall 2025 to present)

  • Regularly write letters of recommendation and scholarship recommendations for students applying to four year colleges (ongoing)

Notes From Students

Thank you for recognizing how hard I work and for being as supportive as you are. If it were not for a professor like you, I would not be able to handle as much as I do. You are an inspiration to me and others, and all I can hope is to be just as amazing as you one day. I truly appreciate the warmth and care you put into each of us. You are the reason we excel throughout our education.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful words! You make it so easy to bring a positive attitude to class so thank you! This may be your first semester teaching a college course yet you are doing a fantastic job and make all our lives much more enjoyable and make learning fun! Truthfully I have been hesitant towards becoming a teacher but every time i leave your class I am more sure it is what I was made to do!

I wanted to thank you Dr.Walker for this semester. You made showing up enjoyable and a loving environment. I really can’t put into words how grateful I am to have had you this semester because you truly gave me a reason to show up!!!

Thank you so much, I appreciate this so much and have really enjoyed the class and all the work we have done so far. I had a rough start to college and this is my first semester that I haven’t had to deal with those consequences anymore and it has been quite the adjustment. I really appreciate our class being such a comfortable environment and it really has genuinely impacted my approach to school in a massively positive way. I’ve always noticed that school becomes easier when you have professors that you can tell want to be in the classroom and our class is definitely one of those classes where you can see how much care is put into it. I always look forward to our class and I can’t wait to come in on Tuesday.

First Generation Celebration Week

Advice for First-Gen Students:

I started my college journey with an associate degree, supported by a guidance counselor who believed in me, supported me, and guided me along the way. I continued with a master’s degree thanks to the encouragement of a professor who saw my potential. Little by little I began to trust that I could shape my own future, and years later I earned my doctorate. Every step was possible because I kept asking for help and looking for helpers.

"Ask for help and look for helpers. You will be amazed by how many people want to see you succeed."
